Only the first problem I mentioned was exclusive to single-click. Selecting multiple files is as difficult with single-click as it is with double-click, and the selection mode improves the situation for both of them.

But yes, switching to double-click has been considered and debated a lot of times by now. I am pretty sure every possible argument was put forth for both sides. The KDE community is quite split on the topic. I don't believe it is as important as people make it out to be either way, but I hope the selection mode will alleviate some of the tension.

Ich habe Gnome seit ein paar Jahren nicht mehr genutzt, aber meiner Meinung nach versucht Gnome eher, sich auf das Wesentlichste zu beschränken, während KDE eher versucht, für die meisten Nutzer die allermeisten Funktionen, die sie brauchen, zur Verfügung zu stellen. Das führt dazu, dass manche der vielen Funktionen bei KDE (noch) nicht ganz zu Ende gedacht sind. Aber ich denke, wenn man etwas am Computer bewirken will, benutzt man lieber eine Funktion mit ein paar Macken, als eine, die gar nicht existiert. ^^ Ich glaube daher kommt noch der Ruf, dass KDE mehr Fehler hätte als Gnome.

Big parts of the video are essential arguments for changing the default setting to a double click to open files. Was this considered?

About touchscreen: I don't have one and also wasn't the person to implement the touch-and-hold to enter selection mode, so I unfortunately can't confirm if touch-and-drag to region-select still works. It probably does though. Marco Martin is pretty smart.

Thanks for all you effort, but I hope those feature won't be inadvertently removed/broken because they weren't known while developing this new mode.
